UNC Carmichael Arena – Acoustical Baffles | Chapel Hill, North Carolina
College basketball fans only need three letters to understand the greatness residing in UNC. The University of North Carolina basketball teams are known as NCAA powerhouses for both men’s and women’s teams.
The UNC Tar Heels women’s basketball team have called the Carmichael Arena home since 1975. So how do you effectively absorb the sound of 10,000 screaming fans?
Simple. Contact Chicago Flyhouse to install acoustical baffles.
Keeping the structural integrity of the historically designated building proved to be a challenge. The installation did not allow drilling into the structure near the roof and the installation area was irregularly shaped; each panel then had to be a custom length.
Flyhouse created a design where wire rope stretched tight across where hooks attached to the grommets on the baffles and then suspended the baffles from the wire rope.
During the installation process, the entire arena was covered in scaffolding. However, when the scaffolding came down after all the renovations were complete, no maintenance could be completed moving forward allowing no room for error.
It came down to the buzzer but Flyhouse pulled off a win with this installation.
